My comments on our course "UNIV 100" 's progress

We are studying our course(univ 100) for two months. We are supposed to do many things like presentation, book report, reflective journals, class participation and some other things. This course is being taught only in FCCU in Pakistan. The purpose of this course is "Students will become aware of their strengths and weaknesses in learning by working on a variety of skills. By observing their values and developing strategies this course will help students become successful in their future"[1].

 Now I think the idea is very good but the result is not coming out as good as university should want. Because I usually concern about this course with my friends and what I get that the result is totally opposite to the purpose of this course. If the students are supposed to do, lets say reflective journal entry, presentation or any other thing, on the blog or diary and when I ask them that for what purpose you are doing it, what they say? We are doing this because our instructor want us to do this, for getting grades, only for formality or it is the requirement of this university for freshmen. 

Now my point is that students do presentation for formality, not for making a habit for their life so that they may become a good presenter and developing a confidence to talk in front of audience. Students put reflective journal entry only for getting marks, but not do with the intention of developing habit of getting knowledge from different sources, increasing stamina, writing skills and become hardworking. Students are reading book for making a book report only for extra grades, not for making a habit of reading books of different topics, for increasing their reading skills. All other things that students do only for one purpose, that they may pass this subject in this semester. Those who are doing there homework properly with good intentions they were already in this habit and others are just being forced by the university to do all these things. If the students keep on working on it only for passing it, but are not doing it with the intention of developing their strategies for the whole life then this course is just the wastage of time, nothing else.

There is only one thing that i have developed because of this course is confidence of speaking and debating in the class, nothing else.


Again i would say that the idea is very very good but unfortunately the result is not as good as it should be.  I hope it will be improved very soon.
